Everyone has a responsibility for safeguarding children and young people.
Following the deaths of Victoria Climbie and Lauren Wright in 2000, and the subsequent deaths of Hollie Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, child safeguarding became an increasingly important part of the Government’s agenda over the past ten years. The death of “Baby P” in Haringey and a number of other high profile cases in recent months has led to a further report from Lord Laming, The Protection of Children in England: A Progress Report published in March 2009.
On the same day in March 2009, Sir Roger Singleton submitted his report on safeguarding arrangements in independent schools, non-maintained special schools and maintained and independent boarding schools. Entitled “Keeping Our Schools Safe,” this report makes a number of recommendations – all of which have been accepted by the government.
This year yet more news has come out about the vetting and barring scheme (ISA), relating to staff working in the children’s workforce.
Working Together 2006 emphasises the fact that child safeguarding is everybody’s responsibility and there is a now a statutory requirement for all who form the children’s workforce to receive regular training in Child Safeguarding legislation, processes and procedures, use of the Common Assessment Framework and the wider aspects of keeping children safe at home, in school and within the community.
