Safer Practice in Education Settings

Safer Practice in Education Settings

We offer face to face training in schools and other venues, as this seems to be more successful in encouraging interaction and discussion. However, we also offer the same training remotely, using Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

For all management, teaching and support staff - delivered in your school or service base. Please contact us to discuss your exact requirements.

In response to Keeping Children Safe in Education, this course explores the Government's latest guidance included in a raft of documents; including Behaviour and Discipline in Schools: Guidance for headteachers and staff, Managing Allegations Against Staff, Use of Reasonable Force, Searching, Screening and Confiscation, underpinning the Education Act 2011 and referring to the document entitled Guidance for safer working practice for those working with children and young people in education settings Ref: The Safer Recruitment Consortium.

According to The York Report (2012), there are approximately 6500 allegations made against education staff and other members of the children's workforce and foster carers every year.

As a follow up to the Basic Awareness Training, this course provides an opportunity for all staff to consider appropriate professional behaviour and relationships, which will keep children safe from abuse and staff safe from unwarranted allegations.

The course has been very well received as, all too often, it is assumed that staff will use common sense to determine the boundaries of acceptable and appropriate behaviour and relationships. It is important for schools and other organisations to develop a Code of Conduct for use during induction and to ensure that all staff are aware of the school's or organisation's expectations. This course has proved to be a useful opportunity for all staff to work together in order to begin to create their shared professional Code of Conduct.

This programme is appropriate for the entire staff team of a school or other organisation involved in work with children and young people. Schools and organisations for whom we have delivered this training have reported that it has triggered more detailed discussion for weeks afterwards than any other staff development activity.

The content is covered during a half day in your school or service base and includes an opportunity to develop some skills of classroom management by exploring situations of conflict and de-escalation. This will be of value to all staff – even experienced teachers – but also to many support staff who interact with the children and young people. These staff rarely have an opportunity to develop the necessary understanding of child and adolescent psychology or how to manage potential conflict.

The objectives of the course:

To ensure understanding of the context of Safer Practice guidance
To increase understanding of its significance to all staff
To consider the nature of allegations against staff in order to avoid or to manage issues
To consider what is safe and what is unsafe practice
To increase understanding of responsibilities as staff members, as colleagues and as managers
To support the maintenance of a safer culture within schools.
