Safer Recruitment

We offer face to face training in schools and other venues, as this seems to be more successful in encouraging interaction and discussion. However, we also offer the same training remotely, using Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

Keeping Children Safe in Education outlines the expectation that staff who have responsibility for recruitment should undertake this training regularly (about every 5 years).

For Heads, designated senior staff, other senior managerial staff, bursars, office managers and governors – anyone engaged in managing staff recruitment. This course is also suitable for those responsible for recruitment of staff or volunteers in other agencies, the voluntary & community sector.

Under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, enacted on 12th October 2009, the chair of any appointment panel now bears personal responsibility for the decisions of the panel. It is a requirement that at least the Headteacher and Chair of Governors have undertaken this training, with a renewal every five years.

As schools often have several people who are responsible for recruitment, the course is available for delivery in your school for a number of staff, or centrally for individuals at a venue in London & the South East and in The Midlands.

Much of the training is delivered through case studies, providing an opportunity to discuss issues, to consider responses and to share experiences. Many senior staff value the opportunity to consider hypothetical situations or to share real concerns they are experiencing now or have experienced in the past.

Our trainers are accredited by the Safer Recruitment Consortium and all our delegates have found it a much more fulfilling experience to undertake this training in a group situation, with an opportunity to discuss thoughts, ideas and experiences, rather than in the isolation of an on-line course. However, this course covers all the same areas as the Safer Recruitment Consortium's online training and provides an appropriate accredited certificate, meeting the statutory requirement for inspection.

It is recommended that at least two staff within your school or organisation have undertaken this one day training (9.00am - 4.30pm) to ensure someone is always available to meet this managerial responsibility during recruitment. However, we are increasingly being asked to deliver this training in schools as well as at central venues. Should you wish to join a centralised course please use the Book Now button. If you would like to discuss an option to receive the training in school please use the contact page or telephone the office to discuss your requirements. (NB for five or more staff it is more cost effective for you, for our trainer to come to your school or setting). This could also be organised for a group of schools if you are part of a formal or informal federation.

The course is based upon the new Part 3 of Keeping Children Safe in Education.
The content covers:

The Modus Operandi of Abusers
The Safer Recruitment Process

In addition it provides an opportunity to seek expert advice, in order to clarify the complex and ever changing world of DBS (formerly CRB) checks and the Disclosure & Barring Service (formerly ISA: Independent Safeguarding Authority).
