E-Safety and Anti-bullying/cyberbullying workshops for Primary & Preparatory Schools (KS1 & KS2)

We offer face to face training in schools and other venues, as this seems to be more successful in encouraging interaction and discussion. However, we also offer the same training remotely, using Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

NB: for secondary schools or through schools from 3-18, we offer a KS3 workshop, a KS4 workshop and a KS5 workshop, as well as staff and parents awareness sessions.

"Paul pitched the workshop just right to engage and inform our students of the key issues surrounding the use of technology today and most importantly getting them thinking about how they can protect themselves. Student and parent feedback was really positive and all said their understanding of e-safety has improved as a result of the workshop. The accompanying booklets were also excellent." SMSC/PSHCRE Co-ordinator - John Ferneley Academy, Melton Mowbray

For primary/preparatory schools we offer a package of a workshops for KS1 (Reception and Yr 1) 20 minutes introductory story, video and activity. (Yr 2 children) 30 minutes interactive workshop; 75 minute interactive workshop for KS2 pupils (differentiated for Yrs 3 & 4 and for Yrs 5 & 6) and an awareness raising sessions for staff and parents. We believe that a parents' session is particularly important as it is vital that parents progressively establish ground rules with their children when they are in KS1 and KS2, before they become firmly entrenched in adolescence and adolescent use of chatrooms and interactive internet sites.

A typical package might be.

KS1 (Reception & Yr 1) 20 minutes introductory story, video and activity.

KS1 (Yr 2) 30 minutes interactive workshop, which focuses on playing games online and not talking to strangers and includes a focus on - What is bullying

KS2 (Yrs 3 &4) 75 minutes interactive workshop with the following aims.

- To consider the difference between use and abuse of technology.
- To consider the vulnerability of photographs on phones and the internet.
- To consider what we really mean by "Don't talk to strangers!
- To ensure understanding of how easy it can be to become carried away with conversations & relationships in the real and the virtual world.
- To consider what is bullying and how it can be perpetrated via the internet and mobile technology
- To consider the reasons for age limits on chatrooms.
- To provide tools with which children and young people can safeguard themselves in their use of the internet, chatrooms (& mobile phones).

KS2 (Yrs 5 & 6) 75 minutes interactive workshop with the same aims, but with different perspectives and using different resources.

(See also details of the KS3 workshop on the secondary schools web-page)

The pupils' session is followed by either
90 minutes staff twilight session and then a 90 minutes parents' evening session, or
90 minutes combined staff and parents' session, either as a twilight or evening event.
This can also be arranged at morning drop off time, or at a weekend (for boarding schools and other residential settings).

This presentation for adults pulls no punches – setting out the dangers to which young people are exposing themselves, identifying signs of concern and aiming to provide some tools for staff and parents.

We illustrate the approaches we have used with KS2 (and with KS3 when appropriate), so that parents are aware of the input their children have received, but the parents' session leaves nothing to the imagination!

The specific objectives of the staff & parents session(s) are:
- To raise awareness of the manner in which young people use the internet (& mobile phones)
- To consider the size of the issue now and in the future.
- To raise awareness of the language of textspeak.
- To increase understanding of the signs of vulnerability.
- To provide tools with which to safeguard children and young people in their use of the internet (& mobile phones)
