The Prevent Duty for Schools

We offer face to face training in schools and other venues, as this seems to be more successful in encouraging interaction and discussion. However, we also offer the same training remotely, using Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

The Prevent Duty is an important part of the Prevent Strategy in response to the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015, but also importantly an element of schools' responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of students or pupils, under Keeping Children Safe in Education.

Face to face training in this significant area of schools' safeguarding responsibility allows for discussion of what is seen by many as a highly charged element of the agenda. Many delegates value the opportunity to debate with their colleagues, which they miss when engaged solely in online training.

Through use of video, instruction, guidance and most importantly discussion, we explore what is meant by extremism, radicalisation and vulnerability of children and young people. We consider the three themes of the prevent duty; Effective Leadership, Partnership Working and Appropriate Capabilities. We consider the indicators of vulnerability, the workings of referrals to social care in order to protect children from significant harm and/or to the Channel Panel where appropriate. Most importantly we consider ways in which school staff can begin to prevent children from heading down this path towards hurting themselves or others, under coercion.

Our materials are carefully constructed for either primary and preparatory schools or for secondary schools, with significantly different emphases.

We offer either a 2 hours full course, with a break, or a 90 minutes more intensive version. Please contact our training co-ordinator to discuss costs and availability of trainers.
