Governor Training

We offer face to face training in schools and other venues, as this seems to be more successful in encouraging interaction and discussion. However, we also offer the same training remotely, using Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

Governor training courses can be delivered within schools, clusters of schools or other organisations on Saturdays or during evenings, or on weekdays.

Please discuss charges and availability with Liz Court (Training Administrator).

Module 1: "Safeguarding Children: the responsibilities of Governors, Trustees and Boards of Management.

Section 175/157 of The Education Act 2002 places a statutory responsibility on governors to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in their school. Governors have an important role in preparing for inspection and during the period of inspection, but of course an inspection under any of the frameworks is intended to assess whether the policies proscribed are in line with statutory expectations and guidelines - in Keeping Children Safe in Education, Working Together to Safeguard Children and The Prevent Duty - and are reflected in practice.

There is a vast array of statutory responsibilities, requirements and guidance for governors and school leadership teams. Let us guide you through this minefield of legislation in a daytime, evening or weekend session (3 hrs contact) in your school.

Governors are encouraged to participate in all our training, but this course specifically addresses their role in preparing for inspection and their statutory responsibilities in response to:

The Children Act 1989
The Education Act 1996
The Education Act 2002
The Children Act 2004
The Children & Social Work Act 2017

The Education & Inspections Act 2006

The Education Act 2011
The Bichard Report 2002

Module 2: Safer Recruitment Training for Governors, Trustees, Senior Managers and Boards of Management.

Under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, enacted on 12th October 2009, the chair of any appointment panel now bears personal responsibility for the decisions of the panel. It is a requirement that the Headteacher and Chair of Governors have undertaken this training, with a renewal every five years.
This one day course is delivered by our Safer Recruitment Consortium accredited trainers and is an alternative to their online training.

The course is based upon the new Part 3 of Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Previous delegates have found it a much more fulfilling experience to undertake this training in a group situation, with an opportunity to discuss thoughts, ideas and experiences, rather than in the isolation of an on-line course.

The content covers:

the modus operandi of abusers,
the safer recruitment process,
statutory checks and references,
interview skills & questions, and
the creation of a safer school culture.
